I have decided to prolong this feature for an extra week and give to you my number 2 favourite track of all time.....
Jeff Buckley - What Will You Say
I got into Jeff because we had on Irish TV for many years a music show called No Disco presented by Donal Dineen. Donal talked with enthusiasm about Jeff Buckley and when he played the videos I knew I was going to become a massive Jeff Buckley fan. The year was 94 through to 95 when his debut arrived and Jeff was working so hard in the pre-blog days to get noticed. Footage from the No Disco shows came from the below video.
Jeff Buckley epk
It is widely acknowledged that Grace the album is a classic. It's as complete an album you will find with raging rock anthems, love songs, songs of bereavement and hope and of course some amazing covers. Not long after the debut was released Jeff wrote What Will You Say, a song in part about his relationship or possible relationship with his late father Tim Buckley. Like most of the the songs in the list this song means a massive amount to me.
It's been such a long time
And I was just a child then
What will you say
When you see my face?
Time feels like it's flown away
The days just pass and fade away
What will you say
When they take my place?
It's funny now
I just don't feel like a man
What will you say
When you see my face?
My face...
Mother dear, the world's gone cold
No one cares about love anymore
What will you say
When you see my face?
Father do you hear me?
Do you know me?
Do you even care?
What will you say
When they take my place?
My heart can't take this anymore
What will you say
When you see my face?
When you see my,
See my face...
I can feel your time crawling
To a slow end
I can feel my time crawling
To a slow end...
Mother dear, the world's gone cold
No one cares about love anymore
What will you say
When you see my face?
Father do you hear me?
Do you know me?
Did you even care?
What will you say
When you take my place?
Well it's so funny now
I just don't feel like I'm a man
What will you say?

Oooh my goodness !! really really thought today was going to be the day to find out what your top number one is.. oh well 7 more sleeps to go. x x
Tis a great track. I went through a phase of absolute Buckley obsession and tracked down all these rarities (back when there was such a thing as rarities, i guess). Things like 'I Woke Up In A Strange Place' and his version of Dylan's 'If you see her say hello'. Great stuff.
Wonder what's number 1?
Just to let you know, Jeff didn't write "What Will You Say". If I recall, it was written by drummer Matt Johnson about his relationship with his estranged father, but Jeff obviously drew parallels with his own father and many believe it was written by him. My reference is the biography "Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Tim and Jeff Buckley", which, if you haven't read it, is the most amazing book about the parallels between father and son.
