The Frames Pics & Setlist

The band played for nearly an hour as the opening act for Neil Young in Malahide Castle. They were chuffed at getting the gig and at one stage told the crowd that they were in for a wonderful night as Neil Young were on top form during the soundcheck. I was delighted by the inclusion of 7 day mile, Fitzcaraldo and a new song Happiness.

Setlist in Full:

Red Chord
Seven Day Mile

When Your Mind's Made Up
The Stars are Underground

Top 100 (86 - 90)

86. Rage Against The Machine - Know Your Enemy (1992) MP3 MySpace

Where do I begin with RATM. When I was 14 I met and got autographs of the whole band. We also begged to be put on the guest list for their show that evening! RATM were a revelation when they appeared in '92. A rocking song with a message!

87. Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy (1993) MP3 Website

In total I seen Grant Lee Buffalo live three times and they have been one of my favourite bands to see live. They were a three piece band. Grant lee Philips took care of the singing and songwriting. Paul Kimble took on production and bass duties. Joey Peters banged the skins! Great band. My best memory of the band was when someone from the Olympia crowd got on stage and did a Cobainesque run and jump onto the drums during one of their slowest songs of the set. Joey Peters laughed his ass off!

88. Coldplay - Warning Signs (2002) MP3 MySpace

See rant about Coldplay. This song is the list because for a time a few years ago this song was on constant repeat. Love the melodies, message and mood of the song.

89. Sonic Youth - Superstar MP3 MySpace

I have never been a big fan of Sonic Youth. Again timing is the key. I loved the songs Sugar Kane, 100%...but I wasn't the biggest fan of feedback! Superstar is a Karen Carpenter song and Sonic Youth do a great version of this song. You can now find it on the Juno soundtrack.

90. The Flaming Lips - Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (2006) MP3 MySpace

Timing...timing.....timing....again I'm not the biggest fan of the Lips. I have never seen them live (apparently I'm missing out big time) and I only own one album of theirs. But I love this song. Huge anthem and with a big message! What will you do with all your Power?

99. David Ford - I Don't Care What You Call Me (2006)
98. Ben Harper - Glory & Consequence (1997)

94. Slowdive - Allison (1993)

Damien Dempsey New LP Available North America

Taken from Damo's MySpace Blog!

"The Rocky Road" now available digitally in North America!

United For Opportunity is pleased to announce Damien Dempsey "The Rocky Road" now available digitally in North America

CD available August 26th

Damien Dempsey's fifth studio album is a collection of eleven great traditional and contemporary Irish folk songs. The Rocky Road includes collaborations with his heroes John Sheahan and Barney McKenna of The Dubliners along with accordionist Sharon Shannon and it marks a departure for this Dublin-born critically acclaimed, No. 1 selling singer and songwriter.

"Ballads are my roots" Dempsey explains, "it was the first music that turned me on, and the first songs that I heard being sung in my home by friends and family. I would have over two hundred ballads in my head, and I used to sing them regularly in pubs around Dublin in the 1990s. I reckoned I had a good feel for these songs, and as I studied Irish history, I felt I could really tell their story and do them some justice on an album. I've always been an advocate of the sing-song, and I have a lot of very young fans, so naturally these kids are gonna hear all these timeless songs that they may not have heard otherwise."

Top 100 (91 - 95)

91. Pearl Jam - Immortality (1994) MP3 MySpace

Pearl Jam is my band. I own them, their songs, lyrics, personalities, everything! Immortality belongs to their third album called Vitalogy. The album on a whole didn't gel well and to be honest I never listen to it all in one sitting anymore. However there are four brilliant tracks on there. Cordoury, Better Man, Nothingman and this track Immortality. I can't stress enough that I love songs with a message. Enjoy!

92. Counting Crows - I Wish I was a Girl (1999) MP3 MySpace

I have a few guilty pleasures in my top 100. Counting Crows....best bar band until The Hold Steady appeared on the scene! I have all their albums and I think their double live CD Across a Wire is a great compilation of great tunes. They are playing Dublin soon but I'll be in Wales then. Their back catalogue of music is amazing. Worth checking out are tunes like Anna Begins, Round Here, Hanging Around, American Girls, Miami, Rain King, A Murder of One and A Long December which is the video clip below. I Wish I Was a Girl is from the album This Desert Life. Again it's an anthem, great tune, messages about how to improve your life and a killer singalong chorus.

93. The Frames - Angel at my Table (1996) MP3 MySpace

In 1996 the great hope for Ireland's music industry was a ginger haired young man called Glen Hansard and his band The Frames. The Cranberries and of course U2 showed The Frames that it was possible to break America and "make it". There's only so much revenue to be made from our population of less than half of NYC. Angel at my Table from their impressive debut album is surrounded by other Frames classics such as Revelate, Fitzcaraldo, Red Chord, Monument, Your Face and Say it to me Now which was the first song Glen plays in the movie Once!

94. Slowdive - Allison (1993) MP3 Band Website

Slowdive are an amazing band in their own right. I'm sure they were influenced by such artists like Joy Division, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Cure but the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine will always be made. I discovered Slowdive before MBV and I still think their 1993 album Souvlaki is a classic in melodic alternative pop. I love the mood this song sends me into. Reminds me of chilling in my bedroom on a warm summers day lisening to this album. Bliss.

95. Tracy Chapman - Open Arms (1992)MP3 MySpace

Funny funny funny....on researching the video clip sites to find clips for the songs I have posted I did find a clip that uses I Wish I was a Girl but it included dodgy scenes from The L Word. Now to be honest, the research was fun. I pop in Tracy Chapman and Open Arms into youtube and here is the song being used for clips from a movic called Loving Annebelle about a student teacher lesbian relationship! Am I getting some message here! I love this song. If i were to make a come down after sex mixtape where you hold your lover all night long I'd include this song!

100. Jawbreaker - Want (1990)Link
99. David Ford - I Don't Care What You Call Me (2006)
98. Ben Harper - Glory & Consequence (1997)
97. The Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow (2003)

Sunday 7 Degrees of Separation!

West Wing

So we are onto Series 6 of The West Wing after watching Series 1 - 5 on DVD over the course of the last year and a half. I'm constantly amazed by the show, especially watching it years after it was written and made. I'm obsessed with American Politics. I am fascinated by the system. I am looking forward to the next four and a half months till the election. In series 6 we meet Matt Santos who charms his way into Josh Lynams life. Of course Santos is young, idealist, excellent speaker, charming and from an ethnic minority! Sounds familiar! Hope you enjoy these American influenced tunes.

Top 100 {100 - 96}

"5 Friday Favourites" have morphed with influence from the lovely people at
The Vague Space into a definitive weekly countdown of my top 100 tunes in the world ever! So here we start.....twenty weeks countdown of my favourite tracks.

100. Jawbreaker - Want (1990) MP3 MySpace

Jawbreaker formed in 1986 and were in the Husker Du/Pixie led indie punk scene. Hailing from New York the band wrote catchy punk rock tunes for over a decade. The band continues to get named-checked and covered by the likes of Foo Fighters, AFI, Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, amongst many others. "Want" was a love of mine circa 1992 when it was played on the indie pirate radio station I loved. I only recently found the track again and brought me back to my early teens! Bliss!

99. David Ford - I Don't Care What You Call Me (2006) MP3 MySpace

If there is something you will learn about me from this list is that I'm a massive fan of the Anthem song! This is one such song. David Ford is a young artist with just one full lenght album out, some EPs and a few singles. He is touring with Sara "Not going to write you a love song" Bareilles at the moment. The video is majestic and mesmerising.

98. Ben Harper - Glory & Consequence (1997) MP3 MySpace

Ben will appear a few times in the top 100. After Eddie Vedder he would be my greatest influence in my musical life! I found Ben by complete opportunism! PJ Harvey was due to play Dublin with Ben Harper in support! I was in a Tower Records during a clearance sale and Ben Harper's second album was going for next to nothing ....on tape! I took a calculated risk......never looked back. I adore this tune.

97. The Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow (2003) MP3 MySpace

A great tune by an average band. I will never ever ever get bored with the melodies, singing, lyrics and rhythm of this song.

96. The Black Crows - Remedy (1992) MP3 MySpace

Yes i know they are a clone of the Stones! Yes I know they wore flares! Yes I know some of the music was shite! But.......but.......but....this is a classic tune! I love the rhythm section of this tune. You have to feel the love!

5 Friday Favourites!

It's that time again folks.....the weekend is here whoooooohoooooooooooooo! I began theorising today! No it doesn't mean I was high! It's just does anyone else think that the music coming through now is loaded? I mean loaded in terms of there are so many great artists out there including this week with new albums from Joan As Police Woman, Coldplay and Oppenheimer to name but a few! I know there's 6 billion customers for music but I am feel overwhelmed by the amount of good music I'm finding out there! Yet.....Coldplay and their new cd will make or break EMI! How will the money go from the punters to the players? The answer is I suppose simple.....if you like an artist go see him/her/them live! Buy their merch....wear their t-shirts! Pass the word about!

On the Ray D'arcy show during the week the Arcade Fire's Wake Up was voted the anthem of the naughties! I think the Irish voters got it right! For me I would have gone for something like Cannonball by Ricer or Trouble by Ray!

Have a super weekend folks!
