Waterproofing the Inside of Your Basement

Many struggle with moisture in the basement, especially in older houses. In older houses the foundations are thicker than what has been built the last few decades, and when the foundations rarely have a surface temperature of more than 53.6 degrees Fahrenheit / 12 degrees Celsius, this will easily lead to condensation, especially in summer and provide good conditions for the establishment of mold growth.

Moisture in the basement must be fixed to avoid both water damage and negative health effects.

The first thing you should do is to examine the ventilation conditions. Increased ventilation of the basement can help dry out the moisture flow from the ground.

If the paint starts to flake off your basement wall it's probably caused by damp and temperature fluctuation. If the wall is very damp, the solution could be an expensive drainage around the house. However, if the paint starts peeling off here and there, the problem can be solved much easier. If you just remove the old paint and paint it again from scratch, it will flake off once again. The solution is a special mortar, which allows the wall to breathe, such as with clothing or shoes of breathable material. The system many people use consists of a mortar and a top layer. Remove the old paint, repair holes and cracks, and apply with a masonry brush.

Another option is using EPS (Electromagnetic Pulse System)

EPS is based on an ingenious system of electrical impulses that charges the water in the wall with positive ions. The positively charged water is drawn towards the negative electrode in the ground, so that moisture is purged out of the entire wall. The positive ions also prevent water seeping into the wall.

By installing an EPS system, your basement will be so dry that it can be used for residential purposes as you will experience a significantly warmer house. Poor indoor air quality from mold in the basement can have major consequences for both the residents and for the whole house. Residents may experience a noticeable reduction in health and lower performance in everyday life. An EPS system can give you a warm house and a significant improvement of the indoor environment. A warmer home with EPS is not only important for your health and indoor climate, but also for the economy.
